DOSS TRENTO

Altitude: 309 m

The place

The Doss Trento (Dòs Trent in local dialect) is a small hill that rises on the right bank of the Adige River near the capital of Trentino. It is a spur, that in its highest point reaches 309 meters above sea level, rising to more than a hundred meters above the floor of the valley, and is covered by 8 hectares of forest. Together with the Dosso di San Rocco and the Dosso Sant'Agata is forms the "three teeth" of the ancient Roman Tridentum. The original name of Doss Trento is Monte Verruca.

The history

The Doss Trento was affected by humans since prehistoric times. In the north-eastern side, in a rock shelter, were found in 1890 the skull of an adult man and the skeletal remains of two children of the Neolithic age.
On the Doss Trento are the remains of the perimeter of an early Christian basilica. It is likely that this church is seated on an ancient castle of Rhaetian age, from which some derive the name of the underlying district Piedicastello.
During the Great War, the Doss Trento was part of an impressive defense system erected by the Austrians, named the Fortress of Trento. It was a real entrenched camp in defense of the capital. On the 40th anniversary of the end of the Great War, the Historical Museum of the Alpine Troops
was inaugurated in 1958.
