Church

SAN FILIBERTO

San Filiberto

At the entrance of the town of Pella, we find the ancient Church of San Filiberto, currently the cemetery church of Alzo di Pella, in the locality of Prorio.

According to tradition, the oratory is the oldest chapel on the western coast of Lake Orta and was built in the 11th century and donated to the canons of the island in 1039. With a Romanesque plan it has a square bell tower in a slightly raised position compared to the church and dated from the historic Verzone between 1075 and 1110. Towards the end of the 16th century the church was restored and remodeled, while in the 18th century the fourteen chapels of the Via Crucis were built to adorn the sacred enclosure.

During the plagues, and in particular that of 1600, the church was also used as a lazaretto.

On the right side there is a chapel dedicated to the Madonna of Lourdes dating back to the beginning of 1900, closed by a railing and previously used as an ossuary.
