Brolo , a charming town on the slopes of Mount Cregno, is a fraction of the municipality of Nonio and has just over 300 inhabitants. Its name is of medieval origin: the term " brolo " then indicated a meadow within the urban area. This can be confirmed by the fact that the Book of the Land Registry of 1688, one of the oldest documents on the town, reports that the meadows accounted for just under half of the cultivated land.

However Brolo, from the most distant times is called the " land of cats ". This particularity seems to derive from an ancient rivalry with the town of Nonius.

On 21 November 1737, the Oratory of the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows was blessed by the archpriest of Nonius Carlo Giuseppe Gilardino. This was the first step for the official recognition of the Brolo community that asked to become an autonomous parish and to no longer depend on that of Nonius.

The Noniesi witnessed this request deriving the inhabitants of Brolo pronouncing the motto: " When the parish Brol comes, al ratt metarà su al friol " (when Brolo will become parish, the mouse will put on the cloak).

But thanks to the canonical Lorenzo Tarsis, politically supported also by the Gozzani family, on 27 April 1767 the decree was signed for the erection of the new parish of S. Antonio di Brolo.

It is said then that a group of inhabitants, mindful of the mockery of the mouse, went at night to Nonius and nailed a mouse dressed in a small cloak as an ecclesiastic to the door of the houses inhabited by the nobles. Since then Brolo is called the "land of cats".

In recent years the Association "Cats of Brolo" has promoted the spread in the country of numerous murals dedicated to the domestic feline. In addition, the " Strèscia dal gat " was established, a curious journey through the narrow streets of the town, dotted with dozens of images dedicated to the cat.
